In late 2022, a group of people identifying themselves as the "Kia Boyz", created a viral TikTok video challenge. In this video, they explained how to break into and steal Kia vehicles, specifically between the 2011-2021 model years, that were not equipped with ignition immobilizers.

If you currently own a Kia, you may be wondering what to do in response to the sudden uptick in vehicle thefts. We're here to help!

There are one of two things that you can do, depending on how your vehicle is currently equipped:

  1. Install a steering wheel immobilizer or what's commonly known as a "wheel lock".

  2. Schedule an appointment to have a software update performed on your vehicle.

The most important thing to note is that this ONLY affects vehicles without a push-button start. So if you're currently using a physical key, we're here to help find the best solution for your safety and security.

If you need a wheel immobilizer:

Our service department is currently offering these free of charge. They are subject to availability, so we suggest you call our Service Concierge Team before stopping in.

If you need a software update:

Kia is currently offering free software updates for vehicles that are not equipped with the immobilizer. Our service department is ready to assist you and get this update installed on your vehicle. These updates are performed by appointment only, so if you have received a notice from Kia, give our Service Concierge Team a call to schedule your recall appointment.

If your key is equipped with remote start capabilities:

Kia vehicles with remote start capabilities are a great convenience to have. However, when it comes to this particular recall, there may be additional steps to take. Kia has run into a few errors when performing the recall with a remote-start key. They are working on a fix, but until that fix is readily available, we recommend utilizing a wheel immobilizer or "wheel lock". You are more than welcome to have the software update performed on your vehicle, just note that it may affect the usability of your remote start on your key fob.

If your vehicle has been broken into or stolen:

If your vehicle was broken into and/or stolen, first and foremost - make sure to file a police report. If you have already done so and you have since recovered it, we will work with you and your insurance company to ensure the necessary repairs to your vehicle are made.

All vehicles that have been broken into will be towed to our location:

10902 South 150th Street, Papillion, NE 68138

Please reach out to our Service Concierge Team as soon as possible to inform our team of your vehicle coming in, and to answer any additional questions you may have following this incident.
